D5 Book Bag Organization
12:00 PM
I've noticed a lot of Daily 5 posts here lately. I thought I would repost this. I originally posted this way back in my blog beginning (Jan. :) and so many more have blogged up since then that I figured it would be useful.
If you scrolled down and checked out my Daily Five posters you may have noticed that I say, "Grab your bags." Daily Five calls for the use of "book boxes". I didn't like the table clutter that caused. I decided to run out to Staples and buy some hooks to put on the sides of my desks to hang book bags. The bags contain the necessary supplies to smoothly transition into Daily Five. The kids stock their bags in the morning as a part of their morning routine. They need four books in the bag, one non-fiction magazine/book, one picture book, a just right AR book and a just right AR back up book. When I say that it is time for Daily Five the kids grab their bags and find their comfy spots. Here are some pics of my set up.
Let me know if you do something similar or if you have any suggestions!

Like the bag idea. Book boxes are so bulky. I use Sterlite ice buckets. They take up an entire wall on the floor. Love the bags but not sure if it would be good for younger learners who need more books.
ReplyDeleteLove the blog design update.
I also do book bags for Daily 5! Where did you get your bags? I've used the grocery store reusable bags, but they fall apart so easy. I love the idea of putting hooks on the sides of the desks! Thanks for the idea!

Julie, I loved this post and I love your new blog design. Def. a keeper! I am moving to a mobile next year (sigh) so I might order more of the really good stuff bags we use to store my stuff more efficiently. Got any other ideas for storage...I have already taken some big tubs of things home to cut back on clutter in my tiny new home next year.

I have kids who reg. keep way too many books in the bags. We just have reg. clean out/re stock days just like you would with boxes. The hooks have been great. I have the 5 pnd hooks and the kids love them. If I had to do it over again I think I would get the bags with the see through window on one side. It would be nice to be able to see in their bags at a quick glance. I've had these bags for the past 3 years and they have held up great!! I got them at Really Good Stuff. This would be a cool Donors Choose project. Keep me posted on what you end up doing.
ReplyDeleteKelley - I'm sorry about your move. :( Don't worry it will all play out. You are a positive hard working woman and you will make it happen!! :)We just recently got tall metal racks for our bedroom which is SMALL. My hubby was tired of the clutter so he bought a shelf for the corner to organize and save space. It isn't California Closet by any means but it is doing the trick. You could hang homemade curtains to give it a sassy you look. I'll take pics and show ya. I'm not sure how much it cost.
ReplyDeleteThanks on the design. You know I'm a bit of a template jumper!! :)
I love this idea! And the hooks are a great organizational tool :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah! I was just reading about your bug assassin. Too funny! It's as if they see them and have to squish them.
ReplyDeleteOoo, I love the idea of using hooks. I have desks (pushing into groups) right now, but if I were to ever have tables I will definitely use that idea. Otherwise the clutter would make me crazy!
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea!! Just found your blog!!!

Thanks Miss J!! Welcome aboard!!
ReplyDeleteWhile co-teaching 36 1st graders space is a premium. I am wondering:
ReplyDelete1) Would it work to hang the hooks on a cabinet/back of shelf and then either # or put a name above each hook so they can easily grab their bag?
2) Another thought would be to use those see through bags for individual cd players and head phones as a differentiated listening center
3) Not on topic but our math resource teacher bought shower board and had it cut to fit every table and ducktaped it to the table- instant white board access for kids. If you want to, you can permanent marker # lines, elkonin boxes etc right in their space.

Hello! I came across your blog link on the proteacher discussion board about the daily5. I see you are moving from 3rd grade to 6th!?! I am also making a big switch from 2nd to 6th this year!! So needless to say, I am going to keep an eye on your blog this summer - which is fantastic btw :)
ReplyDeleteI have heard so much about D5 and Cafe, that I am going to learn up and try and get it going next year in my room too! Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Nicole
ReplyDeleteI'm not moving to 6th. I wonder where you read that? Were you talking to someone in a comment?? Sorry for the confusion. I hope you still follow along though!
