Book Bags

If you scrolled down and checked out my Daily Five posters you may have noticed that I say, "Grab your bags." Daily Five calls for the use of "book boxes". I didn't like the table clutter that caused. I decided to run out to Staples and buy some hooks to put on the sides of my desks to hang book bags. The bags contain the necessary supplies to smoothly transition into Daily Five. The kids stock their bags in the morning as a part of their morning routine. They need four books in the bag, one non-fiction magazine/book,  one picture book, a just right AR book and a just right AR back up book. When I say that it is time for Daily Five the kids grab their bags and find their comfy spots. Here are some pics of my set up.

Let me know if you do something similar or if you have any suggestions!

  1. Julie, what a great idea! I do something similar but I opted for the magazine holders from Really Good Stuff so I can have kids fit 1/2 in. binders (readers notebooks/response) in them as well. They store perfectly under the kids cubbies in my room. I can post pics. if interested.

  2. This is wonderful! I love the Daily Five...in Texas I used magazine holders from Ikea..one month later...DONE...all beat up! This year I tried Gallon Zip-Locs...they lasted longer, but again....DONE! Where did you get the green and yellow bags. I also have those hooks all over our house, especially at Christmas, but never thought to put them on the students' desks...thanks bunches & I look forward to seeing if you reply about the bags!

  3. Post pics Kelly! I love new ideas and all the pics have been really cool to see.

I got the bags at Really Good Stuff. They have held up very well. I've never had one rip or anything.

I need to replace some hooks that haven't withstood the wrath of my third graders but otherwise I like this system.

  4. We use cardboard boxes that the kids decorate themselves at the beginning of the year. They have lasted all year, which I'm grateful for! I'm not sure if our district could afford the Really Good Stuff boxes, although I do really like how sturdy they look!

I agree with you on the table clutter, but we don't have desks. I would totally do the hook idea if I could!

Love your blog! Mine is new, but under construction. I'm loving all of the inspiration that I've discovered out in bloggy world!

  5. I love your book bags! I use boxes, but don't like the noise they make and the amount of space they take up. I stumbled across your blog trying to google for people who made their own cloth book bags. I love these. They look durable. I love your organizational style. I can't wait to check out the rest of your blog=)

  6. Thanks Mrs. Berg!! I do love my bags. They are very durable!! I've had them for a long time and they still look great. I think if I had it to do all over again I would get those same bags but in the style with the see through side. That way I could see at a glance who wasn't stocked right. Thanks for you kind comment!

  7. Well, I went out and purchased some book bags for next year thanks to this great idea. I am so excited!!! The last thing on my list is to get the Command Hooks. I am searching for the best deal. Where do you suggest I purchase them? Also, should I get the ones that support 3lbs. or 5lbs.? What would you recommend?
