New Look for the Library and Linky Party!

I gave my library a new look! I love my new labels! I used scrapbook paper and labels. I was SUPER frustrated when I went to laminate them and the monster ate like 6 of them!! UGH!! But alas I whipped some more up and tadaa! I now have a new look! I think it matches the rest of the room pretty nicely.
I'm really into using beige's and blacks with
splashes of color all around.
I used Velcro to attach the tags to my baskets.
Do you like my sassy book shelves? I made them myself! I made 4 of them and then talked my dad into making more for me. :) In the past 4 years he has made several for me and my co-workers. They love them!
I like how the labels look with my CAFE board.
This is my anchor chart for text to self connections.
This is the back side of my classroom. The books on this shelf are all buddy reading books. I have multiple copies of all of them. Do you like my READ letters?! I made them with plain wooden letters, scrapbook paper, and magnets.

This is also a shot of my Daily 5 buddy reading chart that covers EEKK reading position. Elbow to Elbow, Knee to Knee!

Now for the linky part!!
Ladybug's Teacher Files is hosting an anchor chart linky party and you should so type on over there and link up!! It just started tonight so there is plenty of time to get in on the action! Click on the picture below to check it out!

Thanks for stopping by and please leave a comment!
I would love to hear from you!

A Wonderful Daily 5/Cafe Resource!!

I was typing along today and I stumbled upon a wonderful resource!! If you haven't check out this blog you REALLY need to get typing on over in a hurry!! Her entire blog is dedicated to the Daily 5 and Cafe.

If your wondering about the picture above, I Googled daily 5 images and I found this. They happen to be posters sold by 3rd Grades a Hoot!  If you want a set of them go here.
I will link up her site below!!

This brings me to wonder who else out there has wonderful resources to offer where the Daily 5/ Cafe are concerned. Do you have sassy posters, lessons, pictures, ideas, etc.?? It can be Daily 5 math too!!

Let's link up and share them!
Let's make this a link up spot for all the Daily 5 / Cafe goodies!!

1. Your link has to be about Daily 5/ Cafe.
2. You must include the url to the actual post not the site. Unless the entire site is on the topic like the one I shared!
3. I just put in the first 4 entries. Yes, they are someone else's blogs! I just clicked the middle/second option under Get an image from the web page you entered WEB and it will give you their image.
4. If you can, post about this linky!

I'm Joining the Party!!

I'm joining in on the blog mixer party!!
A little late on the draw because it started on Wed.

Let's just say this has been one very busy week! We have been doing a little of this...
My sassy 7 year old and her big catch!!
and this....
I got those adorable matching swim trunks
at the gap outlet when I went to SMARTboard training a couple weeks back!
My red on the head just turned 6
and the little guy in the back just turned 4.
and this.....
We left the ER with only 3 stitches!
Poor guy has been accident prone ever since.
Both the boys had bloody noses yesterday.
Good GRAVY!
It hasn't been dull for even a minute!

So... Back to the real purpose of this post!!

Yearn to Learn is having a blog mixing party!
I have found many new/old interesting blogs by clicking through this party and I know that you will too. The blogs are packed with cute ideas and freebies! So I decided I should share my favs!!

Here are the rules:
1.  A blogger who is a "New Kid on the Blog"
(Let's say someone who has blogged 2 months or less and has less than 200 followers)

2.  Post a blogger in your same grade level

3.  Post a blogger in a different grade level

4.  It's all about the button. Find a cute blog button and post it.

Here I go!!!
1. My "New Blog on the Block" is Little Bits!! Click on over there and check her out! We happen to work together and I know she will be featuring some pretty cool stuff!

2.  Here are some rockin awesome 3rd grade blogs!!! I swear there has been an explosion of 3rd grade teachers taking up blogging! I'm going to rock the boat and put more than 1 ha!(as if this post isn't too long already! :)

This crazy lady moved from 2nd to 3rd grade and got all wild and crazy and designed her own blog. But, in the process she was forced to start fresh, WITHOUT all her FOLLOWERS (all 380)!! ahhhhhhh!! I think I would go nuts!! So go on over there and hook a girl up! She has tons of resources to share!!
I included The 3rd Wheel because she really has her site PACKED full of freebies/downloads/fun stuff!! Just about every post has a download attached. I love that we have similar teaching styles and just about all her stuff is ready to use right in my room!! You must get over there and check her out!!

3. The blog from another grade level that I'm choosing to spotlight is.....

Ladybug rocks!!
She is having a super duper big giveaway right now to celebrate 1000+ followers and you really should get in!! Also Ladybug/Kristen is very helpful with tutorials to help spruce up and customize your blog. She is always quick to answer questions and offer help. Her videos are really very easy and helpful!!

Classroom Library Linky

I found a sassy new blog the other day(or rather she found me) and she is having a classroom library linky party! She created her own blog design and it is super cute! Type on over there and link up or say hi and welcome a new blogger on the block!

I just moved to a new room and it is UpSiDeDoWn!!! I'm going to link up using my last years classroom library photos. I'm sure this room will look similar with a few tweaks.

I have a book buying problem that I managed to tame down a bit last year. I find that I have too many books. Seems CrAzY to say that since I LOVE books but I think the kids and I both get overwhelmed with the organization and upkeep. I sorted out MANY of my books when I moved. I brought home the higher level book that I had used for my gifted 4th graders. I'm now committed 3rd grade for the foreseeable future.

I'm heading in today to work on my
WoW Messy RooM!

Leave a comment with
suggestions or ideas for my upgrade!!

Meet Me on Monday!

I'm jumping on board and participating with Never Growing Old for a Meet Me on Monday meet and greet!!
It looked like fun and with school ending soon I needed something different. So jump on and link up!!

Here goes!!

1.  What is the last piece of candy that you ate?

I bought these on clearance after Easter to pass out to students on task. I ended up eating as much as them!! I have little contests at the end of the day for the neatest learning club or the quietest.  The kids really work hard to get a little treat. I will spot a piece of paper or something out of place around the room and they will scramble to pick up and be the one to find the right "piece". You should see them go!! It works like a charm and it only cost me a tiny bite of candy. Just after I started this the janitor started leaving us thank you notes. Ha!  Best part is it's at the end of the day so the candy hits after they leave.  :)
2.  Do you "read" in the bathroom?

No - Not usually.

3.  I can't stand when someone Sharpens pencils while I'm teaching

My kiddos are supposed to sharpen pencils in the morning so they are ready for the day but it NEVER works out that way. Oh well.

4.  Do you do daily, weekly or monthly grocery shopping?

I swear it feels like all the above!! Now that I'm couponing I'm stocking up a bit. We still make regular runs on veggies, meat, and fruit! I was brave and I hit Meijers to get the peppers and Sunny D. 10 for 10 with all three of my little ones. AHHHH!!! Actually it went pretty smooth but I was pretty nervous! I will post pics of my savings later this week when I sum up my weekly savings!!

Come back and link up on Sunday!!

Getting To Know You

I was over at I Teach For A Living..... What's Your Super Power and she had linked up to this sassy site that hosts getting to know you Sundays.

button

I thought it sounded fun so here I go!!

1. Did you watch the royal wedding?

I woke up early all set to workout. I clicked on the tv and that was it! I proceeded to almost run late for work watching the royal wedding. I woke up my seven year old daughter to tell her a prince and princess were getting married. She rolled over and said, oh mom your just trying to get me out of bed. We could hardly get her in the shower. She kept yelling to my hubby - Dad did they kiss yet??? Too cute!

2. Tea and crumpets or coffee and a scone?

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a green tea junkie!!  So, tea and crumpets please! (better yet donuts)

3 Who's cuter..prince william or prince harry?
Neither one does it for me. I guess I'm so old they remind me of my sons! Ha, I'm not that old yet!! I guess they remind me of what my sons will become!!  (they are 4 and 5 but my oldest is a redhead)

4. Can you speak in a english accent?
Heck Yea!! I love to switch into accents when teaching. It cracks my kids up and holds their attention.

5. Do you own a fancy hat?
No way!! I hate hats! I'm an 80's girl that never lost the bangs!

6. Would you rather live in a castle or an english cottage?
I would go cottage. Ahhhhh, I can see it now all quaint and surrounded in flowers!!

7. How old were you when prince charles and princess diana got married? Were you even born?
I was seven years old! Wow! I'm old! hehe

8. Have you found your prince?
I'm married to my high school sweetheart and yes he is my prince!!

Type on over to Mrs. Randall's Learning Library!! Kelly is hosting a classroom management linky party!! I'm so excited to say I've already seen some things I can't wait to do next year!

I'll say this has been the year to make or break all management systems!
I also give out tickets. We work on filling a classroom bucket and then celebrate when it is full. (usually every couple weeks) Each Friday our principal comes around and pulls two tickets and students get to choose a prize from his box or eat lunch with him. They LOVE it!! With the end of school in sight the behaviors have been slipping more and more. On Mon. I decided to have two drawings a day, one before lunch and one at the end of the day. Which ever student was picked got 10 min. with my child's DSi game. They have been wild about it. They are working so hard to get tickets in that bucket.
I still have numerous behavior problems in class but the tickets take care of my slightly slipping to good kids. I have 4 kids on individual point sheets and those have shown some improvement as well.

I use a chart to keep track of student reprimands.
1 = a warning
2= a reflection sheet (I'll upload later)
3= a phone call home
4= a lunch recess detention
5= Trip straight to the office

I used to have kids pull cards for this but I switched up to the chart I keep on a clipboard at my desk. It is a little more private and less in their face. I have had years where the chart worked better because the kids really needed that visual.

I will upload the charts and pages I use to keep track of behavior later today when I run into more time!!

Substitute Teacher Secrets - Linky Party!

It is so much harder to be home sick then one would think. I've been down and out with the flu for the past two days and it isn't fun. On Tues. night I had the ickies start so I pulled up old lesson plans, adjusted them and sent them to the trusted hands of my wonderful co-workers. I was lucky because I had most things already copied and arranged on my desk. I'm even more lucky that I have such willing and awesome co-workers. Today I drove the 40 min. to school to make sure all was ready for today's sub and check my previous sub note. My sub from yesterday had left a 5 page letter. Uh oh!
I'll admit I have a very intelligent rowdy group that needs a strong personality to keep them in line. I prepped today's sub, wished her luck, and hit the road. One of my students on my way out came up  to me and so sincerely and sympathaticly said, "Mrs. Lutton, you don't even want to know what they did to that poor sub yesterday. She was only like 20 and they were really mean to her." Bless her heart.

So my question is this....... What do you do in substitute situations to help ensure your students will be on task or at least not climb the tables and go wild. I do mini lessons on guest teacher expectations but I think more is needed. I've also offered extra computer lab time to students that get on the calm and helpful list.
  • Incentives
  • Special Lessons
  • Favorite Subs
What is your Substitute Teacher Magic that helps keep all calm (or calmer) and normal.

If you want, toss in a funny story about being gone! I'm sick and I could use a laugh!

Dollar Tuesdays Link Up!!

is having a little Dollar Tree Tuesday link up party!!

Head over and see all the cool finds from Dollar Tree and the ways they can be used in the classroom!

I was just recently at the Dollar Tree to pick up favors for my 4year old's birthday party. Fifteen kids later I needed to pinch some pennies! I ended up buying these cute little sand pails which I filled up with chalk, bubbles, a shovel, and treats! This is a picture to give you the gist. I had to run down to the sand box and wash this off because the party was last week and my kids had already put the toys to very good use. The chalk was in a cute package but that wrapping is long gone!! You get the idea from the pic though. I ended up buying all my stuff for 15 kids and I spent under 30 bucks. You could easily get a set for the kids in your room just in time for Easter.
I also saw some very sassy storage baskets!! I already have several of these in black that I use to organize books in my library. I plan to build a math library this summer so I've been on the lookout for baskets to color coordinate for my math library. I think I found them!! I hope they look good in my new room!  :)

Make sure you head over and link up!! I want to see all your awesome finds!!

And These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things!

Katie over at Persnickety Pickles is having a linky party!! The task at hand is to show 7 of your most favorite things. The trick is that they can't be school related! Hard huh?! Anyways jump on over there and link up so I can read yours too!
My Favorite Things!!

Here are my three most favorite things!!!
This one was easy peasy lemon squeezy! We love for summer to hit so we can take our nightly bike rides to the DQ.
(We really do go almost nightly!)
These are my three sassy sweeties! I love them tooooo much! The DQ opened last night so this was our maiden voyage.
I couldn't help it!! I love sharpies!! I really, really, DO!!

We love camping!! Jellystone campgrounds in IN and Cedar Point are our favorite places to go!! Tons of FUN!! We load up the old camper we have and set out to find fun in the sun! I had to make sure to sneak in a picture of my favorite guy!! My high school sweet heart and best friend!

We love the Riverfolk Festival!! They set up at the park just down from our house and we can hear the jamming from our front porch. Last year we spent the entire day there complete with music, dancing, playing, friends, rootbeer, pork sandwiches, and much much more!!

My father is a faithful Michigander Biker! He goes on a week long bike trip every summer. It goes through Michigan and it is hard but a super duper blast. My dad always goes and tries his darndest to get me to go as well. It was pretty hard for him when I had three kids back to back and couldn't go for awhile. He will always go with or without me.  Good times with friends and family!

My husband and I love to eat at the Outback Steakhouse!! I always get the Victoria's Filet! I'm never disappointed!
I got this phone last summer and I love it!! I take all my pictures on it and I love getting online wherever I may be. It really is super sassy!

Well there you have them!! My very most favorite things!!!
Thanks for reading along!

If you want to join the linky party go on over and link up at Persnickety Pickles!

Technology Linky Party!!

Click on over and check out 1st Grade with Miss Snowden!! She is having a link party on technology. I'm sure you will want to grab up all the super cool ideas people will be posting about!

I wanted to join this linky party but felt a little technology challenged. Compared to the rest of you I don't really have a lot of techy experience under my belt. I guess you could say I'm just getting started! :) I have a document camera on the way but my classroom computer has been all I really have and it runs like a dinosaur. (A really slow dinosaur)  I do have a pretty cool projector.

One of my co-workers introduced me to  Schoology it's a social networking site similar to Facebook but it is overseen by an adult. It has the look and functions of Facebook but it is set up and controlled by the classroom teacher. This is probably a site to be used with older students around 4th/5th grade and up.

You might be interested in checking out Free Technology For Teachers this is a teacher Richard Byrne who specializes in free technology tips and lessons for teachers. There is a lot over there to see and learn.

Thanks for the cool linky party Miss Snowden!!

You Know You're A Teacher When....

Abby over at The Inspired Apple is having a link party!! The topic is - You know you're a teacher when..... so here I go!!

You know you are a third grade teacher when.....

- You call random people sweetie. (even poor waitress) I hate it when I do that!!

- When kids call your name over and over you want to yell, "I AM NOT A ROCK STAR"

- You feel the need to recommend books to random kids.

- You get giddy over highlighters, sharpies, and post its!!

- Look at a birthday snack and the first thing you think is hmmmm... who made this and where has it been.

- You remind your own children to be respectful, responsible, and safe.

- Your two year old comes up to you and says their sibling is being a bucket dipper.

- The phone ringing at 5 am makes you wake up and squeal with joy!!

- You walk the halls on the last day of school after the kids have left and sing - schools out for summer!!!

 - A rainy day makes you think oh no, not indoor recess!!

Your turn!! Go over and get linked up!

Daily Organization

Go over and check out the cool linking that Mrs. Patton is doing over at Patton's Patch! She is featuring different subjects and then allowing everyone to link up and share. Super Cool!! Topic right now - How do you organize your daily materials!!

Here is mine!

I have to admit that organization is always a work in progress for me. My room is more organized and uncluttered this year than it has ever been. I try very hard to keep large surfaces empty. I use my giant science desk for organizing the weeks lessons. I always make copies and get overheads ready on Mon. morning or Fri. night and have them sitting there ready to go for the week. I do know that I have to have things where I can see them otherwise I forget. I'm very visual.  :)
I have other pictures of my room in a previous link so feel free to look around!!

While your at it leave a comment or grab a button!!  :)
